I learned about PM from the lead pro on a recent photo expedition to Alaska when I complained about how slow just culling images in Lightroom on my travel laptop was. In my tests with about 20 gbytes of image files I found that using Photo Mechanic to move images from card to computer was reasonably fast but that using it for sorting and culling is very much faster than doing it in Lightroom on that same machine. I think I'll put off PM5 for a while until I "master" a few other things. But when the pro tried to show us an old image of his, he turned on his machine and opened thousands of images in a couple of seconds. And you are probably right that on my machine, with no images in PM5, it was fast. I believe he was making the PM5 equivalent of a collection, and then importing that collection to LR for processing. I don't think the pro was actually re-saving and duplicating files. Thanks to you and the others for the good responses. I use ACDSee and have over 20,000 photo's cataloged with a ton of keywords, ratings etc and while it may not be "lightening fast" it is really fast and I never thirsted for more speed, it is plenty fast.My first guess is that PM5 is not faster than Ligh. My second guess is any time he saves using dupicate applications is wasted fooling around with duplicate applications. As far as transferring actual pictures from one device to another, that is a function of the operating system, not so much the application. What I suspect he is seeing is the fact his PM5 database is empty, so of course it is faster, since it contains no records to index, other than the ones he just recorded. These are all database management systems and are all very fast with today's processing power. My first guess is that PM5 is not faster than Lightroom or ACDSee.

My response to the instructor's use of PM to do initial sorting indicates he just wasn't sure of himself in LR.

It may just be me, but I'd never employ two different software titles to perform the same thing. As I pondered alternatives, it seemed rather obvious to me at the time that Adobe was gonna be the company to stay abreast of the changing technology. My issue with that setup was that neither company was generating updates for a very fast-moving technology. In the earlier days, I used it with Nikon's editing program (Capture NX) and I was quite satisfied as a relatively new digital photographer. Photo Mechanic is actually a rather nice piece of software. Any experience out there?I see a lot of LR file management discussions here.
It does mean you have to work in two systems, however then only the selected best images are in LR which makes it faster to find images and work on them. Since PM5 is many times faster, he says it saves a lot of time. He then moves only the best shots into his LR library for editing. He uses it to download, sort and file images, and then to review/sort/select the best shots. He demonstrated it as only a file and photo sorting system that is very fast. I attended a workshop two weeks ago where the pro instructor asked that we bring PM5 installed. Just wondering if anyone here uses Photo Mechanic 5 for file management rather than LR. I see a lot of LR file management discussions here on UHH, but searching for Photo Mechanic 5 discussions I find none.
